A pair of Armchairs
Beech with original paintwork
Fine floral carving
Bayreuth, circa 1750
Dimensions: 98 cm × 68 cm × 69 cm
Circa 1750, this was still the high Rococo period. While one occasionally speaks of provincial delay in stylistic changes, which suggests that the style was no longer being practiced elsewhere, this is not the case with this pair of armchairs from Bayreuth. The armchairs are stylistically at the cutting edge of the time. They are made of beechwood, with colored paintwork. What distinguishes these pieces of seating is the fine floral carving that covers almost all of the visible wood. Normally, the carved ornamentation is limited to the center of the front crossbar and the spandrels.
